We ❤️ Detroit

It’s always been one of my favorite city’s and I was very happy to share it with Andy, albeit briefly. In just 24 hours we sampled 5 breweries, viewed a multitude of public art, toured the newly renovated central train station, and walked over 10 miles.

Once an alley – now a public gathering space

As an urban planner, I’ve always been fascinated by the way this rust belt city has rebounded. With grit and innovation, residents have renovated and repurposed spaces and rebuilt community. Seeing the restoration of the Michigan Central train station in-person was awe-inspiring and I am in no way ashamed to admit I cried and on film because they provided an opportunity for everyone to record a 1 minute reflection. I hope the building stands as a beacon of hope for our future engineers and innovators.

Michigan station – a testament to possibility

We stopped by the Heidelberg Project, which like the rest of Detroit, has morphed and transformed since my first visit 14 years ago. I appreciate that it still stands as a beautiful testament to the generative spirit of the folks who call the city home.

We said goodbye with a final and best beer at Batch Brewing before heading home to IN. We can’t wait to see you again next spring because OMG I need to buy all the plants at the Eastern Market.
